Dreamweaver CS4 hangs at “Initializing Extension Data”

I found today my Dreamweaver CS4 hanging at the “Initializing Extension Data” startup screen. The resolution I found was to delete the site cache at “C:\Users\[user]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Dreamweaver CS4\en_US\Configuration\SiteCache”. I’m running Windows 7 on a domain so your path may vary a little.

After restarting Dreamweaver it updated the site cache and started working again.

I think it may have freaked out on a large cache after I deleted the actual folder.

I tried going to me \Adobe\Dreamweaver CS4\en_US\Configuration\ and there was not file names \SiteCache\ even when I made all hidden file viewable. Do you know what other file folder it might be stored in? I did a search in the Dreamweaver folder and there are \Cache\ folders but nothing in them that shows anything that looks like what I worked on last. Ohh my dreamweaver stalled on the same screen you got stalled on and then ended up “not responding”?

  @Andy – I remember seeing about four different reasons why it would hang on that screen. Your issue may be different than a site caching issue. Search Google for “Dreamweaver CS4 Initializing Extension Data” and you should find a few different ideas.

The file to delete is WinFileCache-xxxxxx.dat and path may well vary. In my case it’s:
c:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Adobe\Dreamweaver CS4\en_US\Configuration\WinFileCache-[numbers and letters].dat

the directory on XP is:
c:\Doucments and Settings\ [ user ] \Application Data\Adobe\Dreamweaver CS4\en_US\Configuration\SiteCache

Just had this problem with CS3, this solution fixed it.

Halfway worked with CS4. Next problem was Dreamweaver kept getting stuck around 20% of the way through updating site cache, 16GB RAM on my Alienware laptop couldn’t cope with the job. I’ve used Dreamweaver for many years, I shall be using Netbeans (which is free) from now on.
